The Mechanical Engineering Department offers PhD. degree. Students can pursue either study in the mechanical area or thermo-fluid area. The instruction language for PhD. program is English. Before starting the program, all non-native speakers of English are required to submit a proof of satisfactory knowledge of English.
Admission: To qualify for admission to the PhD. program in Mechanical Engineering, students are required to have a MSc. degree from thesis program in a Mechanical Engineering Department.
Evaluation of Turkish citizen applicants is based on their MSc. degree grade point average (GPA) and ALES (Akademik Personel ve Lisansüstü Eğitimi Giriş Sınavı – Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Examination) scores. For foreign applicants, admission to the program is based on MSc. degree grade point average (GPA), ALES/GRE scores and interview (online).
Degree Requirement: Program requires successful completion of 7 graduate courses (total of 21 credits), non-credit RME 600 Research Methods and Ethics course, ME 690 Seminar course, ME 699 PhD. Thesis, which contributes to current literature.
If a student has not taken compulsory courses ME 501 Analytical Methods in Mechanical Engineering I and ME 502 Advanced Numerical Methods for Engineers or their equivalents in his/her masters education, he/she should take these two courses as compulsory courses in the doctoral program. A student cannot take a course in the doctoral program, if he/she has taken it or its equivalent in his/her master program. This will be monitored with care by the Department Doctoral Commission.
Students accepted to the doctorate program with a bachelor degree, must take 2 compulsory courses (ME 501 Analytical Methods in Mechanical Engineering I and ME 502 Advanced Numerical Methods for Engineers) and 12 elective courses, making total of 14 courses (total 42 credits). These students must also take RME 600 Research Methods and Ethics, ME 590 Seminar, ME 699 Ph.D. Thesis, which contributes to current literature. The expected duration to complete the Ph.D. program is eight semesters for students who enter the program after a MSc. degree, and ten semesters for those who enter after a B.S. degree. The maximum durations are twelve and fourteen semesters, respectively.
